01Thermal resistance

  1. Heat rate through a wall

    First, once the wall's resistance is known.

    Q˙=ΔTR\dot{Q} = \frac{\Delta T}{R}
  2. Resistance of a plane wall

    For each layer, from its thickness, conductivity and face.

    R=LkAR = \frac{L}{k A}
  3. Layers in series

    When layers are stacked and the same heat passes through each.

    Rtotal=∑RiR_\text{total} = \sum R_i

02Convection

  1. Newton's law of cooling

    Whenever a surface meets a moving fluid.

    Q˙=hA(Ts−T∞)\dot{Q} = h A \left(T_s - T_\infty\right)
  2. Convection as a resistance

    To add a fluid film in series with a wall.

    R=1hAR = \frac{1}{h A}
